Abdullah Mason faced a challenging last‑minute opponent in Albert Bell, encountering early tension before demonstrating resilience and securing a controversial 12th‑round TKO victory in his hometown of Cleveland.
How Did Abdullah Mason Stop Albert Bell?
In the opening stages, Bell used his reach and experience to outbox Mason, with many commentators unofficially scoring the first six rounds in his favor. Midway through the contest, Mason connected with a powerful straight punch that appeared to break Bell’s nose.
Mason then shifted his focus to the body, forcing Bell into a defensive posture for several rounds. Entering the twelfth, Mason was informed he might be trailing on the scorecards. He answered with a burst of aggression that knocked Bell to the floor.
Bell managed to rise, but he was clearly dazed, a fact he himself acknowledged.
Later in the same round, Mason sent Bell down again, although the tumble seemed more a product of momentum than a clean punch. Regardless, referee Mark Nelson halted the bout, a decision that puzzled observers.
The rationale behind the stoppage remained unclear to almost everyone.
Fortunately, the interruption did not alter the outcome; the three judges had Mason ahead before the final round. Given that Mason had knocked Bell down twice in the twelfth, the victory was already assured, yet the stoppage was widely criticized.
What’s Next For Abdullah Mason and Albert Bell?
At just 22, Abdullah Mason is already a bona fide superstar. Despite still developing, this performance was impressive given the circumstances. He faced a stylistically tough opponent, began slowly, but ultimately asserted his dominance. Mason now stands poised to become a pay‑per‑view attraction in the coming years and has emerged as Top Rank’s leading star.
Albert Bell may have missed his final opportunity to capture a world title. At 33, he remains a formidable opponent for most fighters, yet his lack of excitement and limited drawing power make him an unattractive prospect for promoters.
Should he receive another title shot, it would likely arrive as a late‑noticed replacement.
