Operatives from the Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU) of the Abia State Police Command have detained a man filmed in a viral video assaulting a woman during a domestic dispute.

The individual, identified as 37-year-old Agwu Ukpo of Akanu Ohafia in Abia State, was apprehended in the Ogbor Hill area of Aba by a team headed by CSP Emeka Amanchukwu. The arrest followed credible intelligence that enabled tracking the suspect to the location where the incident took place.

Amarachi Chiyere, the victim, was reportedly attacked over a dispute involving a pot of soup, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka. The suspect’s actions, captured in the widely shared video, prompted swift action by law enforcement.

The case is under active investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), with plans to prosecute the suspect. The police spokesperson strongly condemned the act, labeling it a barbaric and inhumane display of domestic violence. Chinaka emphasized that such behavior is unacceptable and assured the public of the command’s commitment to justice and accountability.

She further called on citizens to reject violence in all forms and reiterated the police’s resolve to uphold the law and protect individuals from harm.
