Accused gunwoman in Rihanna home attack cleared to stand trial

The woman accused of firing at Rihanna’s residence has been judged mentally competent to stand trial.

Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, a Florida resident, is alleged to have discharged a semi‑automatic rifle at Rihanna’s Los Angeles mansion at 1:15 p.m. local time on March 8, while the singer and her partner A$AP Rocky were inside. No one was hurt.

Ortiz has entered a not‑guilty plea to attempted‑murder charges; police previously stated she also faced ten counts of assault with a semi‑automatic weapon and three counts of shooting at an occupied vehicle or residence.

On September 29, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maria Cavalluzzi ruled Ortiz mentally competent to proceed, following a competency evaluation that postponed the case for over four months, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The court documents containing Ortiz’s psychiatric evaluations were reportedly labeled confidential and sealed.

The three shooting counts pertain to Rihanna’s house, the trailer she occupied at the moment, and a neighboring property. The assault counts involve Rihanna, her family, two staff members, and two occupants of the adjacent home.

An earlier criminal complaint named Robyn Fenty (Rihanna) and Rakim Mayers (A$AP AP Rocky) as victims, together with their three children, Rihanna’s mother Monica, and additional individuals. Ortiz’s Tesla was later recovered at a shopping center roughly eight miles from the singer’s home, leading to her arrest.

Although she has pleaded not guilty, a conviction could result in a life sentence.

A police report obtained earlier this year by the Daily Mail indicates that Rihanna was inside an Airstream trailer on her property when she heard what she described as “10 loud bangs on metal.”

A$AP Rocky was also in the trailer when Rihanna stepped outside, saw the gunfire, and discovered bullet holes in the windshield where she had been standing moments before.

The report further notes that Rihanna pulled her partner from bed, warned him they were under fire, and shoved both to the ground; Rocky told officers he awoke to her saying, “They’re shooting at us.”

Meanwhile, A$AP Rocky recently remarked that Rihanna has returned to the studio.
