Not all grass fields are the same.
NFL players overwhelmingly prefer grass over artificial turf, but they demand a high-quality surface. Unfortunately, Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh has long struggled to meet that standard.
Although the condition has improved markedly from the infamous Punt That Didn’t Bounce Of 2007, last year’s playing surface remained an embarrassment for the Steelers and the league. The venue’s dual use for university games added further strain, with some weekends hosting both Saturday and Sunday contests.
According to Jack Markowski of SI.com, a new surface has been installed at Acrisure Stadium. Precision Turf announced Wednesday that the installation of Tahoma 31 Bermudagrass is now complete.
Earlier this year, Steelers owner Art Rooney II admitted that the grass field, which earned an F‑minus on the NFLPA’s annual report card, will be replaced. He also indicated that a switch to artificial turf could be considered if the renovated grass fails to meet expectations.
Players would despise a move to turf, but they would prefer that to enduring another subpar grass surface in Pittsburgh.
