The tragic death of Hayden Panettiere has sparked discussions about inadequate safeguards for child performers, with Rose McGowan, Anna Paquin and others urging stricter regulations.
On Friday, August 21, both McGowan and Paquin posted emotional tributes to the late actress, who was 36, each condemning the deeply troubling treatment of former child actors.
Renowned for her performances in Heroes, *Nashville*, and the *Scream* franchise, Panettiere passed away at her South Carolina home on August 16. Her father, Skip, announced the loss, describing her as “an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her.” While an official cause of death has not been released, 911 dispatch recordings indicated responders were addressing a suspected overdose.
McGowan wrote on social media, “Rest in Power, Hayden Panettiere. Do not involve children in the entertainment industry. This situation is far from normal. May her spirit find freedom from those who orchestrated this tragedy.”
Having played Tatum Riley in the 1996 *Scream*, McGowan is also a franchise alum, coming after Panettiere’s roles as Kirby Reed in *Scream 4* and *Scream VI*.
Paquin echoed this sentiment on Instagram, stating, “It is no coincidence that many former, especially pre‑sexualized, female child stars experience tragic lives and untimely deaths. The ‘systems’ that appear protective on paper often fail to safeguard them adequately.”

She later explained that she was referring specifically to experiences on set where child actors are prematurely objectified as ‘sex objects’.

Having made her debut at 11 months in a Playskool advertisement, Panettiere rose to prominence as a child star with roles in Disney’s Remember the Titans and subsequent films such as *Ally McBeal*, *Raising Helen*, *Tiger Cruise*, *Racing Stripes*, *Ice Princess*, *Malcolm in the Middle*, and *Bring It On: All or Nothing* before turning 18.
In her first public comment since her daughter’s death, Panettiere’s mother, Lesley Vogel, criticized the actress’s former partner, Brian Hickerson, who was present at the time of death. Vogel accused Hickerson of domestic abuse, which he acknowledged in a May *TMZ* interview. Vogel and Panettiere had been estranged for some time prior to the tragedy.
