Former England captain Ben Stokes has signed a lucrative one-year contract with the Adelaide Strikers, reportedly worth nearly $500,000, setting the stage for a significant impact in BBL|16. Head coach Tim Paine has now outlined his vision for how the all-rounder can best contribute to the team.

“Stokes provides us with immense flexibility. My initial discussions regarding his deployment centered around opening the batting, as I believe he is built for that role in the Big Bash,” Paine explained.

The former Australia Test captain also believes Australian conditions will favor Stokes. The pace and bounce characteristic of local pitches could allow the left-hander to fully leverage his aggressive strokeplay.

“He can play 360 degrees. He possesses immense power and genuine class,” Paine added.

A Potential Pairing with Matt Short?

Should Paine execute these plans, Stokes could form a formidable opening partnership with Adelaide captain Matt Short. Short has cemented his status as one of the BBL’s top performers, claiming the Player of the Tournament award twice. Paine is particularly excited about the prospect of uniting the two batters, despite their contrasting playing styles.

“I love that combination,” Paine said, emphasizing the quality and diversity the duo would inject into the Strikers’ top order.

Stokes arrives in the BBL with an unparalleled résumé. Across his international career, he amassed over 11,000 runs and 19 centuries, highlighted by career-best scores of 258 in Tests and 182 in ODIs. His T20 resume also features two IPL centuries, including an unbeaten 107 off 60 balls for Rajasthan Royals in 2020 and a 103 off 63 balls for Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017.

With the ball, Stokes has claimed 352 international wickets, boasting career-best figures of 6/22. His capacity to deliver across multiple disciplines is precisely what makes him such a valuable addition to Adelaide.
