Pope Leo XIV Making History by Appointing a Woman to a Key Vatican Role
The Vatican is advancing gender equality by formally promoting Italian Sister Alessandra Smerili to a prominent position within the Church’s migration and environmental departments. This marks the first time a woman has been appointed to a major administrative role in the Holy See, signaling a strategic shift in leadership diversity efforts.
Smerilli, currently serving as the No. 2 in the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, replaces the retiring Canadian Cardinal Michael Czerny, who approaches this milestone at the age of 80. Her appointment underscores the Pope’s alignment with previous initiatives under Pope Francis to elevate women into decision-making roles within the Church.
Cardinal Fabio Baggio, the new “pro-prefect,” will also oversee part of the Vatican’s environmental outreach in Castel Gandolfo. The broader appointment reflects the Church’s ongoing commitment to integrating women into leadership structures, a move that resonates with recent requests from devotees calling for greater female representation in ecclesiastical positions.
