Africa: African Heads of Tax Administration Pay Courtesy Call On President Barrow

The President Adama Barrow received a delegation of African tax administration officials attending the Africa Tax Administration Forum Masterclass at the State House.

Led by Yankuba Darboe, Commissioner General of the Gambia Revenue Authority, the officials briefed President Barrow on the objectives and outcomes of the three‑day forum, which convenes tax administrators across Africa to discuss tax administration, revenue collection, challenges and opportunities.

The session focused on improving tax administration, enhancing revenue collection, and addressing the fiscal challenges facing African countries.

After the meeting, CG Darboe told reporters the discussions were highly productive and praised President Barrow for supporting tax reforms that have increased revenue collection from D3 billion annually to D3 billion monthly over the past decade.

Mary Baine, Executive Secretary of ATAF, commended the President for hosting the delegation and urged him to champion stronger, resilient tax administration systems, citing The Gambia’s model as an example.

Delegation members, including the Chairperson and Vice‑Chairperson of ATAF, praised The Gambia’s commitment to domestic revenue financing, describing it as a more sustainable approach for Africa’s development.

Minister of Finance Seedy Keita congratulated the GRA on delivering a successful ATAF Masterclass, stating it reflects confidence in The Gambia’s tax administration system as a model for the continent.

The ATAF meeting, attended by senior tax officials and experts, will use the forum to strategize the future of tax administration and revenue mobilisation across Africa.
