Africa: Prioritizing NTDs as a Human Rights Imperative
During my tenure within Malawi’s health sector—spanning roles as a clinician, public health officer, national health program leader, and ultimately the Minister of Health—I have witnessed the profound impact of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) on individuals and communities. My first-hand experiences have illuminated how these conditions not only hinder daily life but also obstruct the realization of fundamental human rights.
NTDs persist as barriers that limit children’s education, trap adults in economic limbo, and inflict physical and social suffering. These diseases are deeply intertwined with inequality, affecting those already marginalized by health, education, and economic disparities. As the world steps into the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, we stand at a pivotal moment to affirm the urgency of addressing NTDs through a human rights lens.
Globally, notable progress has been achieved, with 61 countries eliminating at least one NTD. Yet, the consequences of inaction remain stark. Schools remain closed for affected children, households shrink under economic strain, and stigma perpetuates cycles of exclusion. It is only by confronting these challenges with unwavering commitment that we can accomplish real change.
Malawi exemplifies the potential of sustained action. A country heavily impacted by NTDs has demonstrated that eliminating these diseases is achievable with dedication and collaboration. This progress sets the stage for a broader vision: recognizing NTDs as integral to human rights.
A resolution at the Human Rights Council would mark a historic step, formally acknowledging the human impact of NTDs and reinforcing accountability. This move would amplify efforts to ensure every person has access to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and dignity.
The time for action is now. Let us advance equity, strengthen health systems, and uphold human rights. Globally, we must act together to end the burden of NTDs.
