The African Union Commission has urged Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any actions or statements that could exacerbate tensions and threaten regional peace and stability.
In a statement released late Thursday, the Commission emphasized that the three nations should resolve their disputes through established diplomatic channels and peaceful dialogue.
On Thursday, Ethiopia ordered the closure of its embassy in Eritrea and declared ten Eritrean diplomats persona non grata, leading Asmara to sever all diplomatic relations with its neighbor.
Additionally, Ethiopia declared an Egyptian diplomat persona non grata and required him to depart within 48 hours; Cairo retaliated by declaring an Ethiopian embassy counselor in Egypt persona non grata and ordering him to leave within the same timeframe.
