Agit Kabayel may soon have the opportunity to secure another major world title.
The German contender has been a steady presence in the heavyweight division since first making waves in 2017 with a successful title defense against Derek Chisora.
After a period of relative stagnation, Kabayel has surged forward over the last 18 months. His recent momentum includes impressive stoppage victories over Arslanbek Makhmudov, Frank Sanchez, and Zhilei Zhang, the latter of which secured him the WBC interim title.
Following Oleksandr Usyk’s decision to vacate his titles last month, Kabayel was elevated to full champion status. The undefeated fighter is now preparing for his next move, with his most recent victory occurring in January via a three-round stoppage of Damian Knyba.
A high-stakes unification bout may now be on the horizon; according to reports from The Ring, negotiations are underway for a showdown against WBA champion Murat Gassiev.
“A heavyweight unification bout between WBC champ Agit Kabayel and WBA champ Murat Gassiev is being explored for later this year, Kabayel’s promoter, Spencer Brown told The Ring’s @MikeCoppinger.”
Gassiev has also seen his standing rise following Usyk’s departure from the title picture. After originally winning the WBA (Regular) title with a stoppage of Kubrat Pulev in December, Gassiev now holds the full WBA championship. Following a sixth-round stoppage of Peter Kadiru in July, a victory over Kabayel would elevate Gassiev to a two-weight unified world champion, adding to his previous success in the cruiserweight division.
