AI Drone Rescue Marks First Use of Fire and Rescue NSW’s Advanced Detection System in Kosciuszko National Park]
Two hikers who strayed from a walking track in Kosciuszko National Park were located within five hours through the use of an artificial intelligence-equipped drone, marking a first-of-its-kind rescue operation conducted by Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW).
The two men, both in their twenties, were reported missing at 7 pm on Tuesday evening after failing to arrive at their designated meeting point on schedule.
FRNSW deployed its remote air piloted system, whichutilized thermal imaging technology to locate the hikers on the Dead Horse Gap track, approximately 35 kilometres southwest of Jindabyne.
During the search, the hikers activated a red light on their mobile phones to signal the drone in darkness.
The drone’s integrated speaker enabled direct communication with the stranded individuals, while its spotlight guided ground rescue teams to their precise location. The pair were discovered roughly half a kilometre from the trail.
Rescued in cold conditions less than five hours after being reported missing, the hikers exhibited mild signs of exposure but declined medical treatment, according to officials.
This mission represented the inaugural deployment of FRNSW’s drone-based AI detection system for locating missing persons.
Fire and Rescue inspector and regional duty commander for the NSW Alpine area, Phillip Eberle, noted to the ABC that the technology potentially reduces search durations by several days.
“It’s definitely helped transform what could have been a prolonged incident into a remarkably swift resolution,” Eberle said.
“There was every possibility we could still have been searching.”
Eberle emphasized that the drone technology facilitates quicker rescues while simultaneously reducing risks to rescue personnel.
“It means less time spent on the mountain, fewer hours searching for individuals, and reduced exposure for volunteers, allowing them to return to their families more quickly,” he explained.
Looking ahead, Eberle expressed hope that future advancements will enable drones to deliver emergency supplies and care packages to those awaiting ground rescue.
“We could spare rescuers overnight exposure and instead drop off rescue packs so individuals remain safe until morning conditions improve for everyone,” he told the ABC.
Fire and Rescue commander John Marzol urged hikers in snowfield areas to notify the National Parks and Wildlife Service prior to trekking and to register for complimentary Personal Locator Beacons, ensuring they avoid becoming lost in remote terrain.
