Tensions escalated in Tirana on Saturday as opposition supporters demonstrated outside Prime Minister Edi Rama’s office, burning symbolic pillows that Rama had placed there as an invitation to dialogue with students.

The Democratic Party supporters gathered for approximately an hour and a half before marching toward the Ministry of Education, where a separate student protest was scheduled to take place.

Students have organized demonstrations outside the ministry at 2 p.m. local time, with university lecturers also expected to participate in the mobilization.

Heavy Police Presence Amidst Unrest Concerns

Security forces have significantly increased their presence around the Ministry of Education in anticipation of the student gathering.

Water cannons and units from Albania’s Rapid Intervention Forces (FNSH) have been deployed near the building following social media calls encouraging student participation in the protests.

Prime Minister Rama acknowledged the growing public discontent, stating that his government is preparing a response to the concerns raised through the demonstrations.

“Within a matter of hours or days, we will present our overall reflection on what a significant portion of society is trying to convey,” Rama said, noting that public support for the protests reflects a desire for the government to become more responsive.

The prime minister also issued a stern warning against violence, promising a sustained response from authorities.

“All those who glorify violence, all those who echo violence, and all those who perpetrate violence must understand that just as the urban unrest was intense, concentrated, and prolonged, so too will the state’s response be prolonged and persistent,” Rama stated.

His comments come as security forces remain on high alert in Tirana, with opposition supporters and students organizing separate demonstrations.

Authorities are bracing for potential confrontations as protesters converge on the Ministry of Education.
