Albertans have voted overwhelmingly to remain part of Canada, according to projected results from a province-wide ballot on holding a future independence referendum.
With most votes counted, over two-thirds of participants chose to stay within Canada rather than pursue separatist plans, Elections Alberta reported.
Prime Minister Mark Carney hailed the result as “a clear choice” by Alberta residents.
At a pro-separatist watch event in Edmonton, the atmosphere shifted as projected results confirmed the majority vote to remain in Canada, though one separatist leader maintained their campaign was not finished.
The vote was initiated earlier this year by Premier Danielle Smith in response to a public petition, and was viewed as a significant test of national unity.
Smith, who opposed the separatist movement, welcomed the results, stating: “Albertans have voted for a stronger Alberta within a united Canada.”
Supporters of independence argued the oil-rich province’s economic growth had been hindered by Ottawa’s environmental policies.
Opponents, including the Prime Minister, called for a united Canada amid external pressures, including an ongoing trade dispute with the United States.
