Carlos Alcaraz claimed his first singles title since February, overcoming Jiri Lehecka in the Japan Open final. In just his third tournament since returning from a four-and-a-half-month layoff due to a wrist injury, the Spanish star rallied from a sluggish start to defeat the Czech player 7-6, 6-4.
This victory marks back-to-back titles in the Japanese capital for Alcaraz. Despite showing inconsistent form throughout the week, he delivered a commanding finish. The Spaniard expressed his joy, stating: “I’m really happy to be able to lift a trophy again. It’s been a while, and obviously, it’s extra special after my injury.”
“It was a tough week where I didn’t find my best tennis or my best level, but I did find the right solutions, and that’s what matters in the end. I would say today was the best match of the week, or at least the most consistent level I played, so I’m just really, really happy.”
Lehecka, ranked world No. 19, started sharper and took an early 3-1 lead. However, Alcaraz fought back to level the match at 3-3, dazzling the crowd with his full array of shots during the tie-break. He won five consecutive points from 2-4 to take the first set. In the second set, Alcaraz made his decisive move in the seventh game, breaking serve to lead 4-3, and ultimately sealed the championship with palpable delight.
Alcaraz kicked off the season in spectacular fashion, capturing his seventh Grand Slam title to complete the career Grand Slam at the Australian Open, followed by a triumph in Doha before his injury setback.
In other news, Jannik Sinner confirmed on Tuesday that he will be sidelined for the remainder of the year due to a knee issue. “On the advice of his medical team, Jannik Sinner will follow a course of treatment for inflammation in his knee,” his team announced. “The decision has been made to undergo treatment now to allow Jannik the necessary time to recover before beginning preparations for 2027. Consequently, Jannik will be unable to compete again during the 2026 season.”
