Australian international Alessandro Circati has completed a high-profile transfer from Parma to Benfica, describing the move as a “privilege” and expressing excitement about joining the Portuguese giants. The 22-year-old defender, who played a pivotal role in Parma’s Serie B title win last season, has signed a five-year contract with the Lisbon club for a reported €20 million ($33 million). His departure follows other moves involving Socceroos players, including Lucas Herrington’s transfer to Hull City and Nestory Irankunda’s switch to Sporting Lisbon from Watford.

Speaking to Benfica’s official website, Circati said, “To all the Benfiquistas, I can’t wait to play in front of you all and win as many titles as we can. It’s a huge honour. It’s a privilege. I’m over the moon, couldn’t be happier.” He added, “I think it’s a reward for many years of hard work. I’m so happy to be here, and I can’t wait to play for Benfica.”

Circati, an Italian-born defender who rose through Perth Glory’s ranks before joining Parma in 2021, has quickly become a key figure in Serie A. He earned 17 caps for the Socceroos, including four World Cup appearances, and scored one goal. Parma honored his contributions in a statement, noting his 96 appearances and role in their recent promotions.

“Alessandro made a total of 96 appearances for Parma, including 37 in Serie A, scoring two goals and playing a key role not only in the club’s 2023/24 Serie B title triumph but also in securing survival over the following two seasons,” the statement read. “President Kyle J Krause, CEO Federico Cherubini and the entire Parma Calcio family would like to sincerely thank Alessandro and wish him every success in the next chapter of his career.”
