Durham 102 for 2 (Lees 53*) vs Derbyshire
Durham captain Alex Lees demonstrated exceptional composure on a rain-interrupted opening day of the Rothesay County Championship fixture against Derbyshire at the OurCoop County Ground.Navigating challenging conditions with immense discipline, Lees struck an unbeaten 53 from 125 deliveries, guiding the Division Two leaders to 102 for 2 before bad light forced an early conclusion.
His innings included a resilient 61-run second-wicket partnership with Will Rhodes. The stand was eventually broken when New Zealand seamer Brett Randell, who finished with figures of 1 for 25 from 11 overs, dismissed Rhodes for 23.
While Ben Aitchison claimed the other early wicket, Derbyshire’s disciplined bowling attack struggled to break through Lees, who anchored the innings across 38 overs.
The day’s progress was severely limited by thunderstorms, which delayed play until 4:00 PM and restricted the first two sessions to just 16 deliveries. However, once play resumed, the contest provided immediate action.
Ben McKinney briefly disrupted the rhythm by pulling Aitchison for six, but his stay was short-lived; two deliveries later, an expansive drive resulted in a catch behind.
The greenish surface and overcast skies created a testing environment for the batsmen, favoring the bowlers from the outset.
Making his Derbyshire debut, Randell—noted for his historic feat of taking five wickets in five balls earlier this year—showed great control, conceding only 11 runs in a tight six-over spell.
The presence of Anuj Dal and Nick Potts added to the pressure, forcing Lees and Rhodes into a methodical and absorbing period of batting.
Even a brief two-over stint from England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir proved difficult, as he conceded only three runs. The accuracy of the Derbyshire attack was further evidenced by the fact that Lees and Rhodes required 133 balls to construct their 50-run partnership.
The partnership concluded when Randell, bowling from the Racecourse End, induced an edge from Rhodes to second slip, where Aitchison took a sharp catch.
With only five overs remaining before deteriorating light ended play, Lees had successfully steered his side through a demanding and weather-affected afternoon.
