Alex Palou Secures Detroit Grand Prix Pole as McLaughlin and Power Battle in Qualifying Showdown]
Alex Palou delivered a precise performance in Saturday’s qualifying session to claim pole position for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, leading a tight battle at the top of the leaderboard.
The Spaniard, driving the #10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, recorded a swift lap of 1m01.9017s in the Fast Six to secure his 16th career pole position. The fourth driver to take the track in the final session, Palou managed his single-lap attempt perfectly to stake his claim at the front of the grid.
“I felt really good with my lap,” Palou said. “I thought there was not much more margin from my side, so I tried and put everything together. Yeah, so happy that we made it to the pole and we stuck it there. Happy to get the #10 Honda Honda here in Detroit on pole. Good step, but the big day is tomorrow.”
Will Power of Andretti Global secured second place with a time 0.2232s adrift, while Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin followed in third. Six-time series champion Scott Dixon joined Palou on the podium advance with a fourth-place effort in his #9 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, ahead of Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard in fifth and Kyle Kirkwood in sixth.
The Fast Six session showcased the tight competition, with McLaughlin initially setting the pace at 1m02.4559s before Power improved to 1m02.124s. Kirkwood struggled with tire issues, posting 1m03.030s after experiencing brake lockup, while Lundgaard’s #7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet was hampered by a fresh engine installation following Saturday morning’s practice incident.
In the Fast 12 round, seven different drivers held the provisional pole position during the session. McLaughlin’s 1m01.333s with 15 seconds remaining proved sufficient to advance, with Power and Kirkwood occupying the next two spots. Pato O’Ward narrowly missed the cut, losing to Marcus Armstrong by just 0.0480s.
The decisive moment came in Group 1 when Mick Schumacher’s crash in Turn 7 brought the session to a halt. After the red flag, Armstrong capitalized on the remaining time to jump to the top of Group 1 with a 1m02.230s lap. Schumacher’s Team Penske teammate David Malukas also encountered trouble, hitting the outside wall in Turn 7 during Group 2’s final moments, bringing his Saturday to a close.
Group 2 saw Palou initially lead with 1m01.581s before Kirkwood responded with 1m01.488s. The session ended prematurely when Malukas’ violent wall contact damaged his #12 Team Penske Chevrolet, preventing any further attempts.
