Algeria will hold parliamentary elections on July 2, marking the first such vote since the pro-democracy Hirak protests that began in 2019. Voter participation is anticipated to be low, as many citizens may continue to reject the political system to express dissatisfaction with current governance. In the 2019 elections, turnout was only 23%, with significant opposition boycotts and widespread voter abstention as a form of protest. Although no official boycotts are planned this year, civil society groups and opposition movements have urged voters to stay home to signal their discontent. FRANCE 24’s Claire Paccalin reports from Algiers on the evolving political climate surrounding this pivotal election.
