Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana is set for a lengthy spell out after sustaining a torn anterior cruciate ligament during Belgium’s World Cup win over the United States men’s national team on Monday.
Onana, 24, was forced off in the 21st minute of Belgium’s last-16 victory and was later seen on crutches, wearing a brace around his right knee.
The injury represents a significant blow to Aston Villa, with Unai Emery wanting to build around the midfield three of around Onana, Boubacar Kamara and Youri Tielemans.
Villa were not looking to recruitment in that position but will now have to reassess the situation.
