“We’re really going back to our roots.”
After reacquiring control of Ambush with her partner Verbal in April of last year, designer Yoon Ahn has moved the label’s production back to Japan. The move aims to tighten quality oversight and give the brand a chance to “be more real,” she explains, signaling a return to the label’s foundational ethos.
Ahn has been reading Women Who Run with the Wolves, Clarissa Pinkola Estés’s 1992 bestseller about reconnecting with an instinctual female power. In Tokyo, where she lives, the tension between societal expectations and primal nature is palpable: “Japanese people are really in their heads, especially in the city, because there are so many unwritten rules we need to follow. Because of that, the city is like a well‑oiled machine, and everything is functioning, but when you’re in it, I feel like it drives all that energy up to your head,” she says.
That tension inspired the collection, blending streetwise attitude with rugged, mission‑ready pieces. Ahn emphasized modularity, adding extra zips and fastenings that let trousers turn into shorts or adjust for breathability. A standout is a reversible, squishy‑nylon MA‑1 bomber paired with a skirt featuring thigh‑riding buckles. Combat boots and heeled mules coexist seamlessly, embodying what Ahn calls “seamless” design.
Primal motifs appear throughout: a painted wolf on a jacket back, bold camo prints, and fur‑trimmed bag straps. The color story mixes natural and industrial tones—oxidized copper, wet concrete, mossy green, and accents of cobalt—to inject energy and spice, as Ahn describes.
The resulting collection captures the intelligence, toughness, and sexiness that propelled Ambush in the 2010s while reframing it for the future. “In the past, fashion lived in a fantasy,” she reflects. “Now I want to be more in my body.” The sentiment resonates with style‑savvy women eager to embrace both wildness and sophistication.
