Thomas Weir Pauken II, 50, has pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring to act as an unregistered agent of the People’s Republic of China. According to court documents, Pauken, a freelance journalist and analyst, knowingly collaborated with operatives affiliated with China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) over a period of several years.
Prosecutors allege that Pauken used his credentials as a writer and researcher to gather intelligence and conduct influence operations on behalf of Beijing. He reportedly tasked with identifying and assessing potential recruitment targets among U.S. government employees and dissidents, as well as drafting propaganda materials intended to shape American public opinion regarding sensitive geopolitical issues.
The plea agreement acknowledges that Pauken accepted direction and funding from MSS handlers while presenting himself as an independent commentator. He faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for later this year.
