A U.S. military service member died in northern Iraq while participating in a controlled disposal operation targeting unexploded munitions from a previously crashed Iranian drone, according to a Sunday statement by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).
CENTCOM reported: “A U.S. service member in northern Iraq was killed in action July 18 during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone. A second service member was wounded and continues to receive medical treatment for a minor injury.”
The fatality raises the total number of U.S. personnel killed to 17 since the United States and Israel initiated military action against Iran on February 28.
On Saturday, CENTCOM announced that two U.S. service members were killed and a third listed as missing after an Iranian strike hit a military facility in Jordan on Friday.
In Sunday’s update, the command confirmed that a comprehensive search led to the recovery of unidentified human remains at the site earlier that day, with identification procedures currently underway.
