Rafael Leao’s future at AC Milan continues to dominate the summer transfer agenda, with the winger’s representatives reportedly offering his services to Aston Villa. However, new head coach Ruben Amorim dismissed the speculation surrounding the Portuguese international following his competitive debut, insisting the player’s situation is secondary to the collective.
Amorim oversaw a 2-1 victory over Torino on Sunday to open the Serie A campaign. Notable absentees from the matchday squad included Leao, Christopher Nkunku, Fikayo Tomori, and Youssouf Fofana—all players currently navigating potential exits. The manager initially cited a fitness issue preventing Leao from traveling, but offered a pointed assessment of the forward’s standing in his post-match press conference.
“Rafa Leao is not important, in this or in any moment,” Amorim told Rai Sport. He stressed that the team concept supersedes any individual, highlighting the performance of 19-year-old midfielder Alphadjo Cisse, who started in a number ten role and scored in the win. “The most important thing is the squadra, in any moment, and I’m really happy with Cisse. We just need to be ready if one player is not in the squad, we have another that can help us win games. We’ll see what happens at the end of the market.”
Milan return to action on Friday against Venezia at San Siro, with Leao expected to remain sidelined. The 25-year-old had previously expressed a desire to leave before the Club World Cup, though concrete interest had been limited to Saudi Pro League clubs—which he resisted—and Galatasaray, who failed to meet Milan’s valuation.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Leao’s agents have now proposed the player to Aston Villa, prompting the Premier League club’s ownership to evaluate the feasibility of a deal. Discussions between Milan executive Gerry Cardinale and Villa’s hierarchy initially centered on Tomori to address defensive needs, before Leao’s name was introduced into the dialogue.
Any potential transfer remains at a preliminary stage, as the approach originated from the player’s camp rather than a formal bid from Birmingham.
