A thriving semiconductor industry is fueling a sharp increase in trade in Xi’an, one of China’s most venerable ancient capitals, which has now become the country’s leading provincial capital or provincial-level city for export growth among those with publicly available data.

The capital of Shaanxi province in western China recorded a year-on-year increase of 115.5 per cent in trade during the first nine months of 2026. Exports rose far more than imports, increasing 142.1 per cent.

Two product categories drove much of the expansion. Shipments of automatic data processing equipment and parts surged 388.1 per cent year on year, while integrated circuits rose 251 per cent. Together, they accounted for 76.5 per cent of total exports.
