Andy Cruz Set for Vacant IBF Title Opportunity Against Subkhankulov

IBF champion Raymond Muratalla vacated his title after failing to make the 135-pound limit during his recent defense against Robson Conceição. Planning to continue his career at light welterweight, Muratalla’s departure opens the door for the division’s top two ranked contenders.

Cruz (7-1, 4 KOs) suffered a majority decision loss to Muratalla in January, a fight he entered in just his seventh professional bout. Muratalla’s increasing pressure and activity in the later rounds highlighted that Cruz’s extensive amateur resume had not adequately prepared him for the physical rigors of a demanding professional fight.

The 31-year-old Cuban returned to the ring in July, stopping late substitute Abraham Montoya in three rounds. However, this brief resurgence did little to demonstrate that he had resolved the vulnerabilities exposed by Muratalla.

A highly skilled counterpuncher with elite reflexes, Cruz relies heavily on distance management, quick reactions, and precise single shots. While these tools are effective in shorter amateur bouts, maintaining them over 12 professional rounds—where constant directional changes and escaping exchanges can exhaust a fighter unaccustomed to fighting on the inside—will be a monumental challenge.

Subkhankulov (12-0, 6 KOs) will attempt to force exactly that kind of grueling contest. The 34-year-old Russian southpaw secured his spot by stopping Bakhodur Usmonov in the 12th round of their April eliminator, a fight in which Usmonov was counted down four times across the final three rounds before the referee intervened.

Subkhankulov’s southpaw stance will severely test Cruz’s lead footwork and his ability to deliver the right hand without lingering in range for counter shots. The Russian is unlikely to be fazed by feints or a difficult opening six rounds. His optimal strategy will be to attack the body, wear Cruz down, and push the final third into a grueling test of stamina.

The two fighters share a history, having met in the semifinals of the Ústí nad Labem Grand Prix in May 2019, where Cruz won by split decision. While this three-round amateur result gives Cruz a sense of familiarity, it reveals very little about how their contrasting styles will mesh over a professional championship distance.

The October 7 deadline could impact more than just the fighters’ purses. Cruz has spent his career fighting primarily in the United States, whereas Subkhankulov has conducted most of his bouts in Russia and on IBA-promoted cards. If negotiations collapse and Subkhankulov’s side wins the purse bid, Cruz may have to pursue the championship far from his usual home turf.

Despite the risks, this represents a favorable path forward for Cruz. He avoids a rematch with Muratalla and faces an opponent he has already defeated. Still, two championship bids within his first nine professional outings underscore how aggressively his career is being accelerated.

At 31, Cruz cannot afford to spend years developing against mid-level competition. Securing the vacant belt against Subkhankulov may be the calculated shortcut his team requires. Conversely, losing would confirm that the transition from decorated amateur to professional champion demanded too much too soon.
