Artificial intelligence leader Anthropic has pledged to allocate 5% of its shares to a newly established fund dedicated to advancing the public good.

The commitment arrives as the company prepares the groundwork for a potential initial public offering that could value the firm at over $1 trillion. The AI sector has faced mounting scrutiny regarding safety protocols and the technology’s broader societal and economic implications; notably, Anthropic’s IPO filing reportedly acknowledges that AI could present “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity.”

The proposed Public Benefit Fund aims to support nonprofit organizations and initiatives addressing AI’s disruption of the labor market. Anthropic emphasized that shares held by the fund would not be utilized for lobbying or political contributions, domestically or internationally. At the board’s discretion, the fund could receive an additional 2% of the company’s equity, the Claude developer confirmed in a Sunday statement.

Reacting to the announcement on social media, technology entrepreneur Elon Musk suggested distributing shares directly to the public, stating he intends to pursue that approach himself.

Last week, Anthropic informed prospective investors that revenue jumped 45% to $16.8 billion in the three months ending September. Like its peers, the company is attempting to demonstrate a path to substantial profitability despite the billions required to develop models and build supporting infrastructure.

Globally, corporations—predominantly in the technology sector—have eliminated thousands of positions following AI investments, citing efficiency gains. Research published by the International Monetary Fund in 2024 projected that nearly 40% of jobs worldwide will be impacted by AI, a figure that could climb to 60% in advanced economies.
