Antonelli Extends Championship Lead with Dominant Victory After Russell’s Retirement

Antonelli began the race as anticipated, taking the commanding lead comfortably after securing a strong pole position on Saturday. His early race management set the stage for a successful campaign.

Strategic maneuvering on the opening lap addressed concerns about defending the lead up the steep climb to Les Combes. By allowing Verstappen to pass into Eau Rouge, he reclaimed the lead via slipstream on the subsequent Kemmel Straight.

Behind, Russell challenged Hamilton into Les Combes, attempting an outside overtake in the Ferrari. A loss of stability in Hamilton’s rear wing, disrupted by the lead cars’ traffic, caused Russell to collide with his teammate and retire in the gravel.

Russell expressed frustration, citing a 30-40% power deficit and acknowledging the incident with Hamilton as a racing matter. “It’s one thing after another, not good enough. I’ll reset and see what we can do,” he stated.

Antonelli managed his pace and tires effectively in the opening stages before accelerating as his pit stop approached. On lap 17, he widened his gap to Verstappen from 2.3 to 3.5 seconds.

A virtual safety car deployment for track debris enabled Leclerc to pit with minimal time loss, rejoining ahead of Antonelli. Norris briefly led before Leclerc overtook him on lap 26, creating pressure for Antonelli’s closing gap.

On lap 34, Antonelli reclaimed the lead from Leclerc on the Kemmel Straight, maintaining a gap never exceeding two seconds amid tight racing and looming track-limit penalties. He crossed the finish line under two seconds clear to reassert control of the championship.

This victory marked Antonelli’s first win since Monaco in early June, following a Spanish retirement, an Austrian podium, and a British Grand Prix points finish.
