Antonelli’s Grit Shines Through in a Tough British Grand Prix

Naomi Schiff praised Andrea Kimi Antonelli for demonstrating the relentless mentality needed to win a Formula 1 championship during his frustrating British Grand Prix.

Antonelli, driving for Mercedes, had the race win within reach as he closed the gap to Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, benefitting from a 10‑lap tyre offset strategy that saw him up to 2.5 seconds per lap faster than Leclerc before a mechanical issue forced his retirement.

The front‑right wheel shield shifted, blocking his steering. When the Mercedes pit wall instructed him to retire, Antonelli appealed over the team radio, eager to claim any points possible.

He ultimately finished 15th after serving a track‑limits penalty, but his determination earned widespread admiration throughout the paddock.

“We saw the beginnings of that in Canada when he was coming back on the radio. He isn’t going to let any little thing go— that’s the attitude you need if you want to win this championship,” Schiff said on the Up To Speed podcast.

“He was worried about a single point. He didn’t care if it was just one point— he wanted to score it. The Mercedes team did a fantastic job; their strategy left him out there longer than the others, with a 10‑lap offset. He was reeling them in, 2.5 seconds quicker than Charles when closing the gap, then that unfortunate wheel‑shield issue occurred.”

Antonelli still leads the championship, though teammate George Russell has narrowed the gap to 25 points after finishing second at his home Grand Prix.
