Antonio Conte Emerges as Leading Candidate to Replace Michael Carrick at Manchester United

Manchester United are already being linked with a potential managerial change, with Antonio Conte reportedly emerging as a leading option should INEOS decide to part ways with Michael Carrick.

Carrick only secured the permanent managerial position earlier this year after guiding the club into the Champions League, but the new campaign has gotten off to a disappointing start.

The Red Devils have secured only four points from their opening four Premier League matches, matching the worst start in the club’s Premier League history.

This sluggish start has intensified the pressure on Carrick, particularly following Sunday’s narrow 1-0 derby defeat to a Manchester City side that was reduced to ten men in the first half.

Antonio Conte Tops List of Potential Replacements

According to the September 15 print edition of Corriere della Sera, via Football Italia, the Red Devils are considering Conte as a viable replacement should Carrick be dismissed.

The Italian manager is currently out of work after leaving Napoli at the end of last season, having terminated his contract a year early. Reports suggest he is waiting for a major project before committing to his next managerial role.

Conte’s extensive credentials explain the strong appeal. He has won league titles with Juventus, Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Napoli, including the Premier League title with Chelsea during the 2016-17 season.

However, the situation remains fluid. Carrick’s current contract with the club runs until June 2029, and there is no official confirmation from INEOS regarding a managerial change.

Football Italia’s report emphasizes that Conte is being explored as a contingency option rather than indicating that an appointment is imminent.

Would the Italian Manager Work Well for United?

Hiring Conte would represent a dramatic stylistic shift for the club.

Known as an intense and demanding coach, he typically prioritizes defensive discipline, structural organization, and aggressive wing-back play. While this approach could address the vulnerabilities and inconsistencies currently plaguing the United squad, it would also prompt questions regarding how well the existing players fit his highly structured system.

Carrick certainly deserves context. He guided the team to a third-place finish last season after taking over mid-season, securing Champions League qualification in the process. Therefore, dismissing him after only four league matches would be a significant and hasty decision.

Nevertheless, the pressure is steadily mounting. Former player Gary Neville has already described the upcoming trip to Fulham as a “real pressure game” following the team’s inability to capitalize on their opponent’s numerical advantage.

Consequently, Conte’s availability provides INEOS with a prominent and viable alternative should results continue to deteriorate.
