Antonio Conte has unveiled his ideal next managerial project, intensifying speculation linking him with the Manchester United vacancy. The experienced Italian, who recently departed Napoli, has outlined his desire to take over a historically prestigious club that has drifted from its former heights.
Although Conte did not explicitly mention Manchester United, his criteria closely align with the situation at Old Trafford, where manager Michael Carrick is under mounting pressure after a disappointing start to the season.
Antonio Conte reveals what he wants from next job
In a recent interview with The Athletic, the veteran manager elaborated on his quest to lead a fallen giant back to prominence. He emphasized the necessity of joining a club with a rich legacy that has temporarily lost its way.
“There are many clubs that have somewhat lost sight of their history,” Conte stated.
“I’d like to go to one of these clubs to dust off that history and make it shine once more. Clubs where there’s pressure, where, ultimately, you know full well that you’re not going there just to take part, but to compete.”

While the tactical mastermind avoided naming specific clubs directly, his criteria strongly point toward Old Trafford, a venue where a storied legacy has struggled to match its historic standards in recent years.
Antonio Conte linked with Man United amid Michael Carrick pressure

The timing of these remarks coincides with intensifying pressure on Manchester United manager Michael Carrick. United have endured a sluggish start to the campaign, securing only one win in their opening Premier League fixtures and struggling for consistency across all competitions.
Although Carrick guided the club back into the Champions League last season, their current slump has fueled intense speculation regarding his long-term future, prompting the Old Trafford hierarchy to explore high-profile alternatives like Conte. According to Italian media reports, Conte is emerging as a prime candidate for the vacancy, with suggestions that preliminary contacts have already taken place.
Conte would love to return to Premier League after failed Spurs stint
Securing the top job at Old Trafford would mark Conte’s third distinct managerial spell in English football. The 57-year-old previously enjoyed considerable success with Chelsea, winning the Premier League during his first campaign before later lifting the FA Cup.
His subsequent spell with Tottenham proved far more turbulent and ended with his departure in March 2023.
Conte has nevertheless demonstrated throughout his managerial career that he is comfortable operating under enormous pressure, having also won multiple Serie A titles.
There is currently no indication that Manchester United have decided to replace Carrick or approached Conte about the position.
But with the Italian openly admitting that he wants to restore a historic club where the expectation is to compete for trophies, his comments are certain to fuel further speculation about a potential future move to Old Trafford.
