One of his most significant challenges will be managing Apple’s reliance on Chinese supply chains while navigating intense political pressures from the U.S. administration.

The transition concludes Tim Cook’s 15-year tenure as CEO, replacing an operations-focused leader with a hardware-centric engineer.
Jeff Ternus, 51, joined Apple’s design team in 2001 and rose to senior vice-president of hardware engineering, reporting directly to Cook.
He oversees engineering teams responsible for all of Apple’s product lines, including the iPhone, which accounts for the majority of the company’s revenue.
With Apple’s annual iPhone event scheduled for September 9—just a week after Ternus assumes leadership—there is little time for adjustment as the company prepares to unveil its first foldable device.
“Tim Cook left the company in excellent shape,” said Dan Ives, partner and senior managing director at investment firm Yorkville Ives & Co. “Now it’s about Ternus defining the AI era.”
Ives expects the new CEO to build on existing strengths rather than overhaul Apple’s foundations. “There’s no reason to disrupt what’s already working,” he noted, predicting Ternus will prioritize hardware innovation while maintaining Cook’s streamlined supply chain operations.
While some analysts favored software chief Craig Federighi as a more logical choice for AI leadership, Carolina Milanesi, a partner at Creative Strategies, argues that hardware remains the consumer’s entry point for emerging technologies.
“Consumers still prioritize hardware purchases, and that won’t change soon,” she explained. “The value of AI won’t be fully realized unless users engage with compatible hardware first.”
Ternus holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and previously worked as an engineer at Virtual Research Systems before joining Apple.
Within Apple, he is recognized for advancing durable product designs and reducing environmental impact through innovative engineering. However, assessing his potential as a CEO remains uncertain.
“Even those familiar with him today don’t know him as a CEO,” Milanesi observed. “His role as head of engineering differs significantly from leading a global corporation. The scope of responsibility—and influence—expands dramatically.”
A Steep Learning Curve on the Global Stage
The geopolitical dimension of Apple’s operations, which Cook mastered by balancing relations with Beijing and Washington during Trump’s administration, presents a steep learning curve for Ternus. Apple’s manufacturing ecosystem—a vast network of suppliers and assembly lines painstakingly constructed by Cook—remains heavily reliant on Chinese production.
While Cook gradually shifted some manufacturing to India and Vietnam in recent years, the U.S. government continues pressuring Apple to produce iPhones domestically, threatening tariffs on foreign-made devices. Cook navigated these challenges by making strategic U.S. investments and political contributions while maintaining ties with Chinese authorities.
“Ternus knows Apple Park’s hardware intricacies intimately,” Ives said, “but the global policy arena—especially with Washington and Beijing—will require on-the-job learning.”
Cook will remain active as executive chairman of Apple’s board, a role that includes engaging policymakers worldwide, effectively dividing responsibilities ahead of Ternus’s leadership.
“This transition was strategically smart,” Milanesi noted. “It allows Ternus to focus on innovation without being bogged down by Cook’s diplomatic duties.”
The September 9 iPhone event marks the first public benchmark for the new leadership. Introducing a foldable iPhone would represent a significant product milestone, showcasing Ternus’s engineering vision just eight days into his tenure. “This is the moment Apple set up for him,” Milanesi concluded.
