HUNTSVILLE, Ala. Although only a few months remain in the calendar year, Arcfield, a defense and aerospace contractor, is accelerating its satellite launch plans and preparing to produce a specialized component essential for optical sensing and laser communications.
“Arcfield is actively engaged in multiple initiatives,” Dan Knight, the company’s vice president for Golden Dome programs and strategy, told Defense One at the Space and Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville, Ala., last week. “Rather than positioning ourselves as a single‑focus vendor—whether solely sensors or solely architecture—we integrate the full breadth of our capabilities to deliver a solution that can be readily integrated and deployed.”
Arcfield intends to evaluate several sensor prototypes in the coming months, and its subsidiary Orion Space Solutions plans to launch a very‑low‑Earth‑orbit (VLEO) satellite in September. The payload will be delivered to the International Space Station, where an astronaut will deploy it from a small container, placing it into VLEO. The satellite will conduct ionospheric sensing, as well as communications and other experiments.
Knight noted that Arcfield is also developing geostationary‑orbit (GEO) satellite concepts for 2027, building on its support for the Golden Dome initiative and missile‑warning and tracking missions. “We have extensive experience with low‑Earth‑orbit satellites, and we are now designing a GEO refueling system to enable the Space Force to maneuver without regret, while also providing optical and high‑frequency sensing capabilities.”
The company aims to expand its production of a specialized glass known as an etalon, which is a precisely polished component used in a range of optical applications, including laser communications, high‑precision telescopes, and advanced sensor systems.
This expansion is driven by growing U.S. reliance on sensor technologies for intelligence, navigation, and autonomous systems, as well as administration policies that favor domestic manufacturing of national‑security hardware. “Our foreign suppliers have created a backlog, and we seek government investment through the Pentagon’s ManTech program to establish a domestic etalon production capability for the defense industrial base,” Knight explained.
Arcfield currently manufactures etalons for its own products, but scaling up production will reduce dependence on a Canadian supplier. The company has completed demonstrations and submitted a white paper to pursue government funding that would enable a larger manufacturing footprint for its optical sensors.
“We intend to expand our optical‑sensor manufacturing line, which will require a substantial increase in etalon output,” Knight said. “We cannot continue to rely on external sources for this critical component.”
