DALLAS – Despite a valiant effort from quarterback Arch Manning, the Texas Longhorns fell to Oklahoma in a dramatic Red River Rivalry showdown, losing 27-24 at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday.
Manning showcased his arm talent with three touchdown passes, but two critical interceptions proved costly, directly leading to 10 points for the Sooners in the defeat. The loss drops No. 1 Texas (4-1, 1-1) to a likely shift in the Associated Press poll, with a pivotal home matchup against Florida looming next weekend.
With precision passes of 41 and 34 yards to Cam Coleman and Ryan Wingo respectively, Manning guided Texas to a commanding 17-7 halftime advantage at the historic venue. His 15-yard touchdown strike to Jermaine Bishop Jr. in the fourth quarter tied the contest, as he concluded the game with 260 yards on 19-of-31 passing attempts.
However, Manning’s night unraveled through two pivotal turnovers. Early in the fourth quarter, while scrambling under pressure, his pass intended for Coleman was picked off by Purdue Bowen, who returned it 42 yards for a game-changing touchdown—the first interception return score allowed by Texas since 2021.
In the final minute of regulation with the scoredeadlocked, Texas drove toward a potential walk-off victory. With 19 seconds remaining, Manning’s pass was intercepted by Courtland Guillory at Oklahoma’s 39-yard line. The Sooners (3-2, 1-1) capitalized, advancing 33 yards before Tate Sandell’s 47-yard field goal as time expired sealed their triumph.
Throughout the season, Manning has accumulated 1,122 passing yards with 10 touchdowns against five interceptions, guiding an offense averaging just 22.7 points per game against Power Four competition. As of Saturday evening, DraftKings listed Manning’s Heisman Trophy odds at +5500, ranking him 12th nationally.
