MetLife Stadium — officially designated as New York New Jersey Stadium during the World Cup — has drawn criticism for its unattractive exterior, logistical challenges, and playing surface described by players and coaches as “dry,” “hard,” “uneven,” and “similar to artificial turf.”
According to The Athletic, the venue ranked last among all 16 host stadiums a week into the tournament, with aesthetic scores averaging 4/10 and transport and location ratings lower at 3/10. A return train ticket from Manhattan to the stadium for a World Cup match costs $98 (£73).

Despite these shortcomings, FIFA selected MetLife to host the tournament’s climax, which is projected to attract over one billion viewers globally. The choice may have been influenced by Robert De Niro, a New York native who produced a three-minute, twenty-second promotional video presented to FIFA officials.
The video opens with the Statue of Liberty, its torch ascending toward the sky as a symbol of aspirational dreams.
“We dare to dream big, really big, because that is what we do in New York and New Jersey,” De Niro states, followed by imagery of the Empire State Building.
“Are we ready to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup?” he asks. “Come on, baby, we were born ready. Our time is now.”
