WASHINGTON — The U.S. Army has awarded production contracts worth a combined $192 million to Palantir and Anduril to advance its next-generation mobile intelligence node into the manufacturing phase, the service announced Tuesday.
The Tactical Intelligence Targeting Access Node, known as TITAN, is designed to serve as the Army’s premier ground-based intelligence system. It will gather, process, and distribute critical battlefield intelligence by synthesizing data from joint and national assets operating across Earth and in space.
Palantir, which assumed the role of prime contractor in 2024 following its involvement in the prototyping phase, received $127 million under the production agreement. Anduril, tasked with developing the ruggedized hardware components for the system, secured a contract valued at $65 million.
The contracts cover the procurement and integration of eight TITAN systems slated for delivery over the next 18 months. The order includes four advanced variants and four basic configurations. The Army intends the basic variant to function as a division-level asset mounted on Joint Light Tactical Vehicles and Infantry Squad Vehicle-Utility platforms for enhanced mobility. The advanced variant will serve as a corps-level, military intelligence brigade theater-level, and multi-domain command asset, mounted on the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles. Given that units will be allocated only two basic and one advanced system, the platforms must be heavily protected from enemy targeting on the battlefield.
The Army has spent several years prototyping and experimenting with TITAN, deploying what it termed “pre-prototypes” to the Pacific and Europe in 2022 for operational testing. Soldier feedback has been instrumental in refining the system throughout this process. Early assessments from a deployment in the Philippines revealed that high humidity created unforeseen technical challenges that the Army had not encountered during operations in the Middle East.
Col. Jonathan Lipscomb, the Army’s project manager for intelligence systems and analytics, addressed reporters during a demonstration at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland on Aug. 27. He noted that service leaders believe they have addressed the climate-related concerns through more rigorous environmental engineering practices.
“This effort is the result of Soldier feedback we have received over the past four years of prototyping from units utilizing TITAN prototypes in multiple configurations across diverse operating environments,” Lipscomb said in the Army’s Tuesday release. “TITAN is a key solution that enhances the speed of target recognition and geolocation from multiple sensors. It drastically reduces sensor-to-shooter timelines through automated target nominations while fusing the common intelligence picture.”
Palantir will oversee overall production of the TITAN system, according to the Army. Additional capabilities will be supplied by L3Harris Technologies, Sierra Nevada, Strategic Technology Consulting, and World Wide Technology. Anduril will deliver the ruggedized, vehicle-mounted systems and integrate power and operator subsystems necessary for TITAN to function in the demanding environments where the Army operates, the company stated.
Beyond the production order, the Army will continue its prototyping efforts and integration work onto the JLTV and ISV-U platforms, according to Maj. Dell Barnes, assistant program manager for TITAN.
The Army is also developing a vehicle-agnostic version of the TITAN system, which can be housed in a transportable case, loaded into the back of any vehicle, or even deployed and plugged into a building when needed, Army officials confirmed last week.
“If you’re in that Denied, Degraded, Intermittent, and Limited environment and you don’t have access to the cloud, you don’t have access to the pristine, I’ll call it ‘intelligence community data sources,’ then you can pull in local sensor data direct,” Lipscomb explained. “So you can maneuver on the battlefield to place yourself in position to be within range of those sensors, to be able to receive that data, process it, and then continue to target, dominate, and also enhance the situational understanding.”
