The Gunners have stepped up their search for a defensive partner for William Saliba, with Aston Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa emerging as their top target, confirmed by journalist Nicolò Schira.

Arsenal have already bolstered their squad significantly this summer, most notably with the £75 million signing of Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United. However, recurring injuries have shifted focus to the back line.

William Saliba remains sidelined after sustaining a back injury during pre-season. Meanwhile, Jurriën Timber continues to recuperate from a hamstring injury, with his expected return timeline still uncertain. These setbacks have prompted Mikel Arteta’s staff to prioritise additional defensive reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

According to transfer journalist Nicolò Schira, Arsenal have publicly shown interest in Konsa, whose Aston Villa contract runs until 2028. The England international’s ability to operate effectively as both a centre-back and right-back makes him an appealing prospect for Arteta’s system, which frequently deploys defensive position flexibility.

Talks have reportedly advanced beyond initial enquiries, with The Guardian disclosing that Arsenal issued an offer for Konsa, which was rejected by Villa’s management. A renewed bid is expected in the near future.

Villa remain steadfast in their £60 million valuation, citing Konsa’s current form and his potential role as a long-term asset. However, Arsenal appear reluctant to meet this price tag, considering the centre-back’s contract situation and the club’s existing summer investments.

Konsa has established himself as one of Villa’s most reliable defenders over the past 18 months. His contract with Aston Villa Football Club (AVFC) is set to expire at the conclusion of the 2027-2028 season.

The journalist suggests that while Konsa would undeniably strengthen Arsenal’s options and provide immediate cover for Saliba’s absence, any deal closer to £40 million would be more palatable for the Gunners. Villa are encouraged to maintain their valuation, but Arsenal’s defensive depth – including recent additions – gives them leverage to negotiate more pragmatically rather than succumbing to pressure.

Konsa has made over 200 Premier League appearances since breaking into Villa’s first team during the 2021-22 campaign. His ability to play both as a centre-half and right-back aligns with Arteta’s preference for versatile defenders capable of adapting to various tactical configurations. The journalist highlights that while spending £60 million on a 28-year-old player with contract extension possibilities would be challenging for any Premier League side, Arsenal’s strong financial position allows for strategic flexibility.

Nevertheless, the journalist cautions against aggressive bidding, suggesting that the Gunners should avoid overextending themselves in a market already populated by high-value targets like Sevilla’s Diego Carlos and Everton’s Dan Burn. Konsa offers a balanced mix of athleticism and Premier League experience that could address Arsenal’s immediate needs while contributing to their long-term strategic planning.
