At full-time on Sunday, manager Shelley Kerr assembled her disheartened squad in a familiar huddle before stepping out to address the supporters.
She stood before the 2,500 travelling fans at the Etihad Stadium, applauding as they sang “North London Forever” in a moment of raw emotion.
The reception was warm, suggesting the fans were not yet ready to turn on her.
Arsenal performed solidly against Manchester City, twice taking the lead only to be undone by narrow margins.
“My primary aim was to thank them, connect with them and show them I care about them and appreciate their support in Manchester,” Slegers said.
“I also wanted to convey that – not that I feel sorry for them, as I am partly responsible – but they are coming here and not receiving the rewards, just like the team.”
“I wanted to connect with them instead of walking away and hiding. I’m uncertain how they will react, but I simply wanted to thank them for standing by us.”
Beyond the stadium, however, fan discontent has been growing, and Kerr is aware that her job is under scrutiny.
Club sources maintain that she still has their full confidence; despite disappointment over recent results, they believe Kerr can steer the team forward.
The club invested in the transfer window, bringing in England winger Georgia Stanway, Spanish defender Ona Batlle, and promising German forward Lisa Baum.
These signings were secured early to ensure a full pre-season and prevent a sluggish start, given most players returned from holiday in mid‑July.
The signings have not yet yielded results, but rather than focus on her job security, Kerr is already planning a thorough review to identify issues during the international break.
“There will be a comprehensive review of our season so far,” she added when asked about broader concerns over repeated slow starts to WSL campaigns.
