Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno is transferring ownership of the team to Stan Kroenke, who also owns the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams.
While the exact sale price has not been disclosed, press reports estimate it at approximately $4 billion, setting a new MLB record. This deal concludes Moreno’s 23‑year tenure, during which the Angels have posted the league’s worst record and have missed the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons.
In addition to the Rams, Kroenke controls Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, which also owns the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, and Premier League club Arsenal. Over the past four seasons, each of those franchises has captured a league championship.
Moreno, 80, became the first Latino owner of an MLB franchise when he acquired the team in 2003, a year after its sole World Series championship. He later sparked controversy by rebranding the club from the California Angels to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, a move intended to align the team with the broader Los Angeles sports market. The rebrand failed to resonate with fans and resulted in a lawsuit filed by the City of Anaheim.
In the past decade, the Angels have struggled to achieve sustained success despite rostering elite talents such as Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout. Ohtani departed via free agency to the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Trout’s All‑Star trajectory has been hampered by recent injuries.
“The Angels are a storied franchise situated in a premier market,” Kroenke said in a joint statement from the Angels and KSE. “We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization.”
Moreno added in a separate statement, “We believe KSE’s experience and track record make them the ideal next owner for the franchise. The Angels Organization remains committed to its fans, employees, players, and business partners.”
Kroenke, a Walmart heir and billionaire, has overseen the redevelopment of the former Hollywood Park racetrack near Los Angeles International Airport. The centerpiece of the project, described as the Western U.S.’s largest urban mixed‑use development, is SoFi Stadium. The venue will host its second Super Bowl in February, served as a World Cup site this summer, and will play a central role in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
