Arunachal Pradesh relinquished its inaugural 2026-27 Ranji Trophy Plate Group fixture against Nagaland, citing a deepening administrative crisis within the Arunachal Cricket Association.
The match was originally slated to commence on Sunday, October 11, in Ahmedabad, but the squad was unable to take the field, paralysed by a protracted leadership dispute and pending litigation before the Gauhati High Court.
The dispute has sent ripple effects through Arunachal Pradesh’s domestic cricket infrastructure, incapacitating administrative bodies from orchestrating team selection and training regimens. The ripple has further jeopardised age-group competitions, casting doubt on the state’s broader involvement in the current domestic season.
Arunachal Cricket Association’s Leadership Dispute
The crisis originates from a factional rift within the state cricket establishment. Following elections held in September 2026 that saw Nabam Vivek installed as president, multiple district cricket associations contested the process before the Itanagar bench of the Gauhati High Court, alleging procedural irregularities.
The judiciary has heard the submissions and reserved its ruling. Pending resolution, a stay order has left the association without a functioning authority empowered to make critical administrative determinations.
In the wake of the administrative vacuum, player selection, training camp coordination, and preparations for competitive fixtures have ground to a halt. Contracted players have been left in the dark regarding their reporting obligations for the Ranji Trophy curtain-raiser.
Why Can’t the BCCI Intervene?
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has found itself constrained by the ongoing judicial proceedings, which have effectively stalled immediate resolution.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia told PTI that the court-ordered stay barred the national body from intervening in state association matters, noting that with no functional leadership in place, the BCCI must await judicial clearance before taking action.
The predicament is further complicated by the BCCI’s inability to appoint an interim selection panel while legal restrictions persist, a contrast to prior interventions such as in Bihar, where the board had previously constituted an independent selection panel despite administrative turbulence.
The administrative breakdown extended to age-group cricket on Thursday, October 8, when the state’s Under-19 squad failed to appear for its Vinoo Mankad Trophy encounter against Sikkim in Bhubaneswar, the absence of a functional authority cited as the determining factor.
The immediate focus must remain on resolving the association’s leadership impasse and reinstating a functional administrative framework. Until the judiciary provides clarity, cricketing operations in the region are likely to remain disrupted.
