Despite Suryakumar Yadav’s pivotal role in India’s T20 World Cup victory and his competent leadership, his omission from the T20I squad has raised concerns about selection consistency. The batter managed 242 runs at a strike rate of 136.72 in the T20 World Cup, though his subsequent IPL performance yielded 270 runs at 147.54. “This decision sets a significant precedent,” Ashwin remarked on ESPNcricinfo’s video show. “If we consider dropping a World Cup-winning captain based on form alone, it raises questions about how future selections will be evaluated.”
Ashwin emphasized Suryakumar’s broader contributions, stating, “He’s not just a batter but also the vice-captain and the best-performing skipper in that T20 World Cup. His role in the team’s success cannot be overlooked.”
Shreyas Iyer has been named Suryakumar’s replacement, despite not featuring in a T20I for over two years. During this gap, Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title in 2024 and guided Punjab Kings to the final in 2025. However, Ashwin questioned the decision-making process: “If I were part of that World Cup-winning team, I’d expect to be considered for captaincy based on my contributions. Shreyas’ IPL success is commendable, but team ethos and continuity matter.”
Ashwin further highlighted the importance of Axar Patel as vice-captain, noting, “If the vice-captain isn’t the natural successor, it undermines the team’s stability. This decision might force us to reevaluate our leadership hierarchy moving forward.”
