With over 15 years covering Asian tech, I entered BEYOND Expo 2026 in Macao expecting to see familiar innovations. Instead, I encountered humanoid robots, AI glasses, and a gaming console disguised as a Rubik’s Cube—experiences that hinted at a broader shift in hardware and AI development.

Three discussions with industry leaders revealed critical trends shaping the future of hardware, robotics, and AI innovation in Asia.

Asia’s Hardware Leadership Accelerates

The expo floor showcased polished, market-ready products. Matrix Robotics demonstrated eerily lifelike humanoids, Cresento.HK integrated smart tech into sports gear, and Gamesing created an emotion-responsive instrument. These weren’t prototypes but advanced solutions, signaling that Chinese and Hong Kong firms are now setting global standards rather than following Western designs.

Humanoid Robots: Cost and Data Challenges Remain

Matrix Robotics’ Allen Zhang highlighted that 10,000 units by 2028 require overcoming two barriers: cost and data limitations. Current components, like those in Tesla’s Cybertruck, drive prices above $80,000. Vertical integration could cut costs by 30-50% annually, potentially reaching $27,000 by 2028. Meanwhile, data scarcity—particularly physical interaction datasets—remains a hurdle. The company uses video, simulations, and human-led demonstrations, but reliability, not dexterity, is the critical challenge.

Crowdfunding Evolves: Trust Over Reach

Indiegogo’s Cheryl Tang noted that the platform has prioritized vetting to combat scams. Creators now submit factory photos, production videos, and legal documents before launching campaigns. Influencer endorsements are increasingly required to build buyer confidence. However, Southeast Asia’s e-commerce expectations—centred on speed—make crowdfunding with long shipping delays difficult to adopt.

AI Democratizes Music Creation

Initiai.on’s Jiang Tao shared how he used AI to compose a song for his wife, launching a platform that enables anyone to create music. Initiai.on’s Yinchao app allows users to record voices and generate custom compositions at a fraction of traditional costs. While skeptics question creative value, users prioritize emotional impact over origin, driving adoption across Asia, Europe, and beyond.

Geopolitical Realities Shape Hardware Strategies

Founders at BEYOND emphasized resilience against geopolitical risks. Matrix Robotics plans to localize data storage by country, anticipating scrutiny similar to Huawei. This proactive approach reflects a strategic shift: Chinese and Hong Kong companies are embedding global compliance into their designs from the start, not as a reactive measure.
