Manchester United have lost the race to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder João Gomes, with Aston Villa securing the player’s services this summer.
The Red Devils have already strengthened their midfield with the additions of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, but they remained in the market for further reinforcement in the centre of the park.
Gomes was presented to the club earlier this month, and reports suggested United could open talks with Wolves regarding the Brazil international.
However, Villa have ultimately won his signature, agreeing a £38m package with Wolves for the former Flamengo midfielder.
Gomes has already reached a personal agreement with the West Midlands club and is excited at the prospect of featuring in the Champions League for the first time.
The holding midfielder had also attracted interest from Liverpool, but like United, the Reds opted not to table a formal bid before Villa’s move.
Gomes will now complete a move across the Midlands to Aston Villa, who have brought him in to fill the void left by the recent departure of Youri Tielemans.
