LONDON — AstraZeneca said Friday that camizestrant failed to meet its primary objective in a pivotal first-line trial for advanced breast cancer, a result that could restrict the drug’s future use.
The treatment, tested in combination with another medicine, did not outperform standard care in extending the length of time patients went without disease progression. The SERENA-4 trial included people with ER-positive, HER2-negative advanced cancer who had not previously received systemic therapy for the advanced disease.
Earlier this month, the drug received accelerated approval in the U.S. under the brand name Etcamah for patients whose tumors carry a mutation associated with emerging drug resistance. Had SERENA-4 succeeded, it could have opened a substantially larger market for the treatment.
