At Least 12 Dead as Wildfires Rage Across Algerian Provinces

Interior Minister Said Sayoud confirmed late on Wednesday that twelve people lost their lives as wildfires swept through several Algerian provinces, according to Algerian radio reports.

The fatalities were distributed across multiple regions, with five deaths in Jijel province, four in Bejaia, and three in Tizi Ouzou, local outlet Ennahar TV cited officials as saying.

Sayoud further detailed that fifty-four individuals suffered burn injuries, six of whom are in critical condition and currently receiving intensive care.

On Wednesday, Algeria’s civil protection services recorded a total of 154 wildfires nationwide. In Bejaia province alone, thirty-six fires broke out, with eighteen successfully brought under control.

These devastating fires occur as an exceptional heatwave continues to sweep across North Africa, severely impacting both Tunisia and Algeria.
