ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Police reports confirm at least 31 fatalities and dozens more injuries after a bus collided in the conflict‑affected northern Amhara region.
The overcrowded vehicle was en route from Dessie to Addis Ababa when it veered off the road and plunged into a ravine, according to the Kombolcha Town Administration Police Division.
Emergency response was delayed due to limited infrastructure and the absence of ambulance services, forcing passengers to be transported in public vehicles.
The accident occurred on a notoriously hazardous road winding through hilly terrain. Investigators are still determining the cause.
A similar bus crash into a river in Ethiopia’s southern Sidama region in December 2024 claimed 66 lives.
