Australia and Brazil will face off twice within the same FIFA international window, opening at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville on September 25, then returning at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on September 29.

The twin friendlies represent Brazil’s first matches since their World Cup exit, with Carlo Ancelotti’s squad embarking on a fresh cycle targeting the 2028 Copa América and the 2030 World Cup.

The fixtures were made possible through backing from the Queensland Government and Tourism and Events Queensland, who assisted Football Australia in securing both matches as part of a wider strategy to attract elite international football to Australian soil.

Rather than staging a single exhibition, organizers justified the cost of flying one of the sport’s most decorated national teams by spreading the visit across two matches within the same break.

The price tag behind Brazil’s visit

Hosting a five-time World Cup champion carries a significant financial commitment. Brazil’s reported fee sits at around $7.5 million per match, pushing the two-game series toward $15 million once tour logistics are included.

Dividing the tour between Townsville and Brisbane allows both cities to benefit economically and from tourism exposure, rather than concentrating the entire event and its costs in one location.

A rare test for the Socceroos

For Tony Popovic’s Socceroos, the double-header presents a rare opportunity to benchmark themselves against world-class opposition twice in the same window — something the coach has indicated he wants to pursue regularly.

The two nations have met 11 times since 1988, with Australia recording just one victory — a 1-0 result in the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup third-place playoff — along with two draws across their entire history.
