Australian regulators have initiated legal proceedings against Telegram, alleging that the platform failed to remove terrorist content, including footage of the March 2019 Christchurch mosque attack that claimed 51 lives, as reported by multiple news outlets on Thursday.
Julie Inman‑Grant, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, stated that Telegram, created by Pavel Durov, could be fined up to $38 million for non‑compliance with the Online Safety Act, according to the BBC.
“This case involves material linked to some of the most infamous acts of extremist violence in recent years, such as the Christchurch and Buffalo terrorist attacks,” Inman‑Grant added, as cited by Reuters.
A Telegram spokesperson responded to Reuters, saying, “We deny these allegations and intend to contest them in court,” and noted that the company’s anti‑terrorism measures have led to the removal of thousands of extremist groups in 2026 alone.
Telegram, which hosts numerous cryptocurrency discussion groups, project communities, trading forums, bots, and blockchain‑based mini‑apps, did not promptly respond to a CoinDesk request for further comment.
