MELBOURNE, Australia — An Australian federal lawmaker remains in critical but stable condition following a deliberate vehicle attack, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Tuesday, commending a local barber for helping detain the suspect.
Independent politician Helen Haines, 65, was struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV on Monday outside her office in Wangaratta, Victoria. The 43-year-old driver remained in police custody on Tuesday.
Albanese phoned local barber Ricky Jefferies to express gratitude for his actions in helping restrain the suspect. Jefferies had removed a knife from the driver’s pockets, which police later confirmed.
“It’s a reminder that at the worst of times, we see the best of the Australian character,” Albanese said in Melbourne.
Jefferies told reporters he acted instinctively, stating, “I just ran out the front to see what was happening and helped members of the Wangaratta community.”
The family of Haines released a statement thanking bystanders, health workers, and police for their swift assistance.
Haines, first elected to Parliament in 2019 and re-elected twice, was initially treated in Wangaratta before being airlifted to a Melbourne hospital.
The incident has shocked Australians, highlighting concerns about political safety and security for elected officials.
Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Director Mike Burgess reiterated warnings that politically motivated violence remains a top security concern alongside espionage and foreign interference.
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett said the attack appeared isolated, with potential charges including harming a federal official, carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years.
Recent data shows threats against politicians have doubled in three years, with over 1,000 reported threats in the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Politicians across parties united Tuesday in calling for reduced political tensions and reaffirming Australia’s tradition of accessible leadership.
