An Australian woman who survived a terrifying shark attack at a popular Sydney beach earlier this year says she feels blessed to have been given a “second chance at life” and is determined to make every moment count.
Leah Stewart, 35, was bitten by a shark during a morning swim at Coogee Beach in June, sustaining multiple injuries to her arms and legs, as part of a alarming series of incidents across Australia.
The mother of one was placed in an induced coma and underwent multiple surgeries, including the amputation of one arm.
In a heartfelt online message posted on Monday, Stewart expressed her deep appreciation to supporters who have raised over AU$550,000 (US$394,000; £289,000) on her behalf, noting that her recovery journey has been “incredibly challenging” yet marked by “remarkable” progress.
“After enduring an incredibly difficult few months, I’m overjoyed to report that I’ve progressed sufficiently to regain some independence, and I can finally see a glimmer of hope amidst all this,” Stewart wrote, marking her first public statement since the attack.
“I want you to know that I feel like I’ve been given a second opportunity at life, and I promise to make the most of it.”
Stewart revealed she had been “overwhelmed” by the outpouring of support from family, friends, and even complete strangers, adding that their kindness “has inspired me to heal, rather than harbor resentment.”
She announced that her online fundraising campaign will now be concluded, explaining that the funds collected will support her continued recovery at home and provide financial security for any future medical needs.
“While I still have a long road ahead, my recovery has truly been extraordinary, and a vast majority of that success is owed to the incredible network of love, support, prayers, and encouragement surrounding my family and me from around the globe.”
Australia has experienced a surge in shark attacks this year, with four separate incidents occurring over a two-day period in January, one of which tragically claimed the life of a 12-year-old boy.
In May, a man lost his life to a shark attack while spearfishing in Queensland, and in Western Australia, a father of two was killed after being attacked by a 4-meter (13-foot) shark.
